There's a kind of emptiness that's hard to explain.

It's not quite sadness. Not quite numbness. It's more like... an absence. A hollow space where feelings should be.

You go through the motions. You smile when you're supposed to. But inside, there's just... nothing.

If that sounds familiar, you're not broken. You're just empty right now. And that's different.

Words for the Void

"The worst loneliness is not to be comfortable with yourself."

Emptiness often comes from being disconnected — not from others, but from yourself. When you've lost touch with what you want, what you feel, who you even are.

"I have a hole in me. A big black hole. And I tried to fill it with money, with food, with liquor, with attention... but it never goes away."

We try so hard to fill the emptiness with things. But the hole isn't shaped like any of those things. It's shaped like something else — something we haven't figured out yet.

"Sometimes I feel so empty that I can actually feel the emptiness. It has a weight."

That's the strange thing about emptiness — it's not nothing. It's a presence. It sits in your chest like a stone.

Why We Feel Empty

Emptiness can come from many places:

  • Emotional exhaustion. You've felt too much for too long, and now your heart is on strike.
  • Loss of meaning. The things that used to matter don't anymore, and nothing has replaced them.
  • Disconnection. From yourself, from others, from the life you thought you'd have.
  • Unprocessed grief. Sometimes emptiness is sadness that hasn't found its shape yet.

None of these are character flaws. They're just signals that something in your inner world needs attention.

What Not to Do

When you feel empty, the temptation is to fill it with anything — scrolling, eating, buying, numbing.

But the void doesn't want to be filled. It wants to be understood.

Instead of running from the emptiness, try sitting with it. Ask it what it needs. The answer might surprise you.

A Gentle Reminder

Emptiness is not permanent, even when it feels infinite.

You've felt things before. You'll feel things again. Right now, you're just in a season of quiet — and that's okay.

You don't have to force yourself to feel. You just have to wait, and be gentle with yourself while you do.
